Periods on warfarin

I had pulmonary emboli in October, and was put on warfarin. I had a
period in November and December, but so far, have not had one in
January. I was on birth control prior to the clots (which combined
with crohn's was the reason for the clots). I'm wondering if it's
just the birth control being out of my system, or something else. My
first period after being on warfarin was horrible. I was dizzy, and
for 2 days had to lie in bed with my legs elevated. I'm worried that
if my period is later, it's going to be worse, and considering how it
was the first time on warfarin, I'm scared.
There's NO way I could be pregnant (haven't had sex in over 5 months
and had pregnancy tests while in the hospital) so I'm just wondering.
Can warfarin make your periods more irregular? Anyone else experience
this?

Hi Becky,

Coming off birth control can make you irregular until things settle down and you get into your natural rythymn.

Hi Becky,

I've been off BC for the first time in my life since July 09, due to DVT in right leg. While on Warfarin, my first period after stopping the BC was very mild, as if I was still taking it. Then had no period at all from Aug.- Dec., it was wonderful! Told Dr about it, he wasn't concerned at all. Although just in time for the holidays it came back with a vengeance, very heavy, lots of clots, going on and on for two weeks...just like it was when I first started taking the pill, 20 some odd years ago, and why I started taking the pill in the first place.

I must admit that I was surprised about how much clotting there was, I thought Warfarin would thin it out. I just came off Warfarin 10 days ago, will be interesting to see what difference there is, if any.

Did you have terrible periods before BC Becky, is that why you took BC? You don't say how old you are, or how long you were on BC. What BC pill did you take?

Can't say if Warfarin will cause irregular periods, but I know for a fact that stopping the pill will, a drop in your estrogen levels could cause a lot of symptoms, including dizziness.

Other factors such as, genetics and stress will all play a role in this as well.

My periods seemed to change when I went on Warfarin. I did go off the BC pill as well, but I'd only been on the BC pill for about 3 months, so I don't think going off would have caused much of a change.

But my periods changed from being fairly light, but fairly long (5-7 days) to being heavy and short (1-2 days). I prefer this!! I'm over and done in no time! :)

The thing I'm wondering about is ... is this change because of the Warfarin, or is it because I'm perimenopausal? I guess time will tell.

I went of BC pill almost 2 months ago with my DVT, no period yet, so yesterday I took a test, wasn't pregnant. I was wondering if this could be a warf side effect as well.

I had a period 1 week before I started taking Warfarin 7 weeks ago and haven't had one since. My doctor isn't sure if it's due to the Warfarin or I may be perimenopausal.

Hi, I have been using wafarin for a month now after being diagnosed with DVT caused by enlarged fibroid. I was also given lucrin depo, which is a contraceptive, the dr. did not want me losing any blood because I was sooo anemic, I had to do blood transfusion. Anyway, my period came despite taking the injection. My period is now on it's 8th day and does not show any signs of stopping. Also the pain that came with it was so excruciating, I thought i was having labour pain. Is this normal? I would appreciate any response.

I was diagnosed with a clot in the brain and have been put on to warfarin. My
period in january came heavily but lasted it's normal duration. I was supposed to
be due 2 days ago but am worried if I am pregnant. Me and my husband have
had safe sex using extra safe condoms. I am wondering if coming off BC has
stopped my period or caused irregular cycle. I am confused and scared as I have
been told that pregnancy during warfarin treatment is dangerous. Should
I go to the doctors?

Very interested in this site - always good advice. I am 19, was on BC for skin, got clot in my left leg from hip to knee (in August 2010). My period now as decided to make it's appearance 3 times in about 5 weeks, longer than normal. This is the first incidence - anyone else experienced this?

hi
i have been on warfarin for 2 months now cause i have a clot in my arm caused by my ovranette contraceptive pill. i had a period 3 days after comin off this pill which was extremely painful and very heavy then i had 3 weeks without one, then started my next period which i have been bleeding for 4 weeks now very heavy. i have been to the doctors and they said because i am only 24 and they have never had any 1 so young with 1 before they dont know what to do.i have also been to the hospital twice and they have just said its cause your bloos is thin and you will bleed the whole time you are on warfarin. has any 1 else experienced this with warfarin. i cant possibly bleed for months on end. a normal period week is bad enough never mind months.

I've been on warfarin since I was 17, I'm now 36! Yep, they are worse than ever and wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy! Is it my age which is why they are getting worse? Well I'm off to see my gp on monday as I cannot go on like this, I can't even walk to the shops without getting in a mess! Yuk! Will let u know what the doctor says.

I've been on warfarin for 3 months- so far my period comes when its due; but it is really heavy, longer than normal & the cramps are super bad. I've heard that this can become the norm & continue after warfarin stops- I'm hoping (of course) that I can come off the stuff soon and everythings goes back to normal.

I been on warfarin almost 2 months now and been of bc that long. I have had 1 period and is late now. I am worried that I may be pregnant but I have had 2 negative test so I hope it is just the medicine. This is not my first time coming off my bc but every other time my period was always regular after it.
