One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

General Questions about DVT

Hi, I was diagnosed with a DVT in my illiac vein in Feb. Once the coumadin started working my swelling is almost completely gone and I don't have any pain. Once I am off my meds will it get worse? I've also started exercising like normal. I take spin and do some zumba classes. My doctor said I could do anything I felt like I could do. I'm mainly worried that once I stop taking the meds will my leg get worse?

hi, i was diagnosed with a blood clot in the iliac vein about 2 weeks ago. The DRs are saying it was caused by PID caused by a IUD. From what I can tell from my research you are more apt to get a clot once you have had one and smoking does not help things. What about second hand smoke? I do not smoke but my husband does. Does anyone know anything about this? I have tried searching online but have not really got anything. Thank you all for your post on this forum. I have learned a lot.. God bless you all!

Quad Pain

It has been 4 months since I hit my VMO quad hard at my desk. There is a constant dull pain and at times sharp sensations and tingling and my leg will contract trying to do something. About 3 weeks ago I was standing and felt something release and felt blood flow down the back of my leg. I thought this may have been the end of it. The next morning I woke up and there was a bruise right in the spot where I hit it. This is the first time there was ever a bruise. Also the hair in the spot on my VMO were the bruise formed all fell out. Probably 1 inch in diameter. My quad didn't feel any different though besides the bruise. Within a week the bruise went away and it is now back to the way it was before except for the hair is gone in that one spot and when I take my fingers and squeeze my skin in that spot without the hair I can feel a small lump under the skin almost like a blood clot or cyst or something but if I don't squeeze it you can't see the bump. However when I walk my i... read more

A few years back I had a DVT in my upper right arm (on the inside)
near the arm pit. My armpit was so swollen right-smack in the middle
and looked like a plum. The pain in my arm started about 9 months
before and gradually got worse over time. I have Neuro-Behcets and I
did not know this at the time, but It is one of the symptoms. And
with having pain as well as Rhematoid Arthritis, I couldnt tell what
the pain was, UNTIL one day it felt like someone hit me on the out-
side shoulder part with a baseball bat.The other bad symptom I had was
the shoulder-blade and I could not move my arm at all. WOW, it was
bad. Finally I couldnt take it anymore, and luckily I went to
hospital. They found a DVT and started me on IVdrip of heprin. And
now I have been on warfarin for yrs now and will always be. But to
this day my should still hurts, even tho its dissolved, lately its
been getting worse again and now on my left side. Im feeling like the

Confusion re. compression stockings grading

Am I the only one having trouble the grading of compression stockings?
I'm in the UK and with a calf DVT. At the hospital I was given class 2 Bauerfeind knee-high with a prescription to get a second pair from the pharmacist.

After checking online the Bauerfeind pair has a compression of 23-32 mmHg whereas the Altiform pair which is the only pair the pharmacist could get hold of, while still being class 2 has less compression and is more like 18-22mmHg.

Why such discrepancies even within the hosiery only available on prescription? Because of this, I don't know which compression stockings are adequate for my case. It's driving me insane and every information I find online gives me a different story...

Its been 7 weeks and 4 days and I have gone through so many emotions and read-up on all the related topics.....................
My little brother, aged 27, died 7 weeks and 3 days ago. He had 11 years history of ulcerative colitis (inflammation in the colon) and he was doing very well and suddenly out of the blue he died. He didnt have any shortness of breath or swelling of the legs. Post-mortem results concluded a pulmonary embolism resulting from DVT.
I was very close to my brother, we always talked about his medical condition and what action to take next, I sometimes used to go with him to see his gastroenterologist consultant (who is shocked and cannot explain the death).
Not once was he advised of the danger of DVT or the risks of blood clots due to his ulcerative colitis condition. The consultant states that since he was a very young and active man you would not expect such risks.
I go through the whole what ifs and what should and what could have been done but it bring... read more

Is Your Blood Clean?

Pre-DVT I lived the life..healthy, fit, all of it..so I thought. Of course, that included the usual juggling of kids, family & social life, 50+ hour work week, not enough sleep, unhealthy diet (fast food, candy, soda, meat, dairy, coffee, wine, & the occasional social smoke or two). You know, the average American way of life; managing to keep the outside on par at the expense of my inside.

I ended up with a DVT (provoked by the use of b-control pills & Factor5 Lieden, & my busy life). Better now, but do realize that my lifestyle was a huge factor. I’ve looked into many venues on optimizing my health & merely want to share some of what I’ve discovered along the way.

-Exercise. Do cardio & circulate your blood. Per Dr. Oz (“You, The Owners Manual book), the person who exercises for at least 30 minutes & has a not so healthy diet is still healthier than the one who eats right, but doesn’t exercise.

-Stay hydrated (dehydration = thick blood). See “Your Body’s Many Cries ... read more

Crampy Calf for days

So I went on a long haul trip, and developed thigh pain for two days,
then calf pain. I am curious as to if I should be concerned about a
blood clot. Its not a terrible pain, just a crampy feeling that comes
and goes. In the past Ive had ultrasounds on my legs due to
pain/cramping, and have never had a clot. Should I be worried? I took
asprin during the trips and got out several times. like every 3-4 hours.
I also went dancing two nights ago, and seem to be fine. Im guessing if
I had a clot I wouldnt have been able to dance? Any help would be
greatly appreciated!

I have one copy of Factor V. I had a miscarriage at 13 weeks and another at 4 weeks.
They don't know if they are related but the cause seems to be a clot for the 1st one. I
have had many conflicting opinions from doctors about what I should do. They all say
Lovenox during pregnancy but what about in normal life? A fertility specialist told me a
baby aspirin. The hematologist told me that is not proven to work and to take nothing
unless i am pregnant. My OB told me baby aspirin. I am confused and feel like I am
putting my life in danger to be pregnant. I need a doctor that specializes in Factor

Anyone have any ideas on getting rid of the Warfarin hangover I suffer every morning? My Hemotologist recommends Tylenol, but I don't like to take that. Every morning my head aches and it feels funny, and I get mild head aches at a various times throughout the day. It's a weird feeling, something I've never experienced prior to taking Warfarin.

Travel with DVT

I looking for opinions here ...
I've had swollen/pain in my calf for about 5 weeks and was diagnosed with DVT a week ago. If I don't walk too much during the day, the swelling goes completely away and I feel no pain whatsoever. I'm on 6mg Warfarin (INR monitored daily).
Now, the dilemma is that next week I'm suppose to fly away for a week long vacation to Dominican rep. My doctor isn't too thrilled, and wants me to stay. Would it be really so risky, if I went and take it easy over there?
Any comments appreciated...

DVT - Can clots recurr?

Hi
I got a small clot in my right calf as a result of flying long haul. The clot was small and I was on warfarin for three months. I have now come off warfarin but my right leg aches and is painful if I sit at my desk for too long. I am worried the clot may have come back. The ultra sound showed it to be very small and the specialist I saw said that the clot should be gone as I exercise a lot and took warfarin. I am not sure if I should go back and get my leg checked again. When I first got the clot the pain in may leg was sharp now it is more like an ache?
any one else had this experience?

Persistent swelling in leg with dvt

I have had several blood clots in the past 6 years, the hospital that I
am currently using for treatment has gotten to the point of turning me
away because I can not afford health care and I have so many reoccurring
clots. I have been trying to treat this at home in the same manner they
do at the hospital. Warfarin, lovenox and ibuprophin. I elevate and use
heat compression several times a day. I had all the medications already
from the last clot that was treated a few months ago. Now my leg has
swollen about 3 times its normal size and I can not wear a shoe due to
the swelling in my foot. Any suggestions would be great.
