One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Hi, i was diagnosed with DVT underneath my right knee about one week now and and offically on warfarin for the next while. My doc indicates that I can train and I have done so at a slow pace, usually 2 - 4 km walk and swim (20 min, lift weights as well). Over the last couple of days there was practially no pain at all in my right leg but I noticed today there is a little. Is this normal, some days there is no pain and some there is. I am wondering if a little too much of exercise may cause this. Has anyone everydone the trellis process to remove DVT?

Hi..I am a 54 year old female about 75 pounds overweight. Following the birth of my last child, 26 years ago, I developed deep vein phelbitis as well as superficial phlebitis in my left leg. I did not have any clots. I used lots of aspirin, leg elevation, with hot moist heat and it went away in a month. 12 years later, I developed a spontaneous DVT in the same leg just sitting at my desk at work. It didn't hurt, I just had a feeling of swelling from inside, had an ultrasound and it confirmed blockage of 3 deep veins. I have myself heparin injections once a day for a week, elevated my leg, and started Coumadin. The coumadin made me cold and tired so I just quit after 3 weeks, not understanding the danger of such an action. I never returned to the doctor who discovered the clot. 16 years passed and I had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. 14 days later, I was diagnosed with a small PE in my right lung. I didn't have any symptoms. My leg was quite swollen, but it had be... read more

I had a repeat acute DVT.The first one was 14 years ago. I have also been diagnosed with Factor V.It took 11 days to become theraputic on heparin and coumadin. Was sent home on a Thursday and night and by that Sunday I was so symptamatic for clots I was readmitted. Had a filter put in place and a 2 day Thrombolysis procedure.I am home now recovering from the leg pain and constant swelling. I will be on medication for life due to my history of clots.

My INR continues to be difficult to maintain. I was at 4.2 and after cutting back on coumadin have dropped to 1.4 in a week. I also did Lovenox shots for 3 days which I felt were ineffective.

I am also having a random pain under my right rib cage that is piercing, as well as stomach and back pain on right side. The pain comes and goes but at times I am doubled over. Pain subsides when I lie down. I had a Pelvic/abdominal scan prior to leaving hospital which was negative but pain has increased. I have never had this pain un... read more

So this is day 1 of many I hope not taking any sort of blood thinner. I had a DVT in July 2009 and have been on coumadin with regular INR checks since. I am one of the ones where the DVT came from nothing and has not returned, I blame smoking which I have quit since. Both my family MD and the hemo specialist advises I get off the coumadin as I am 41 yrs old, active, high metabolism...so I stopped the thinners yesterday. Does anyone have any advice with regards to diet, excersise or over the counter drugs to help prevent a reoccurance???

Hi there
I had a DVT found on 8th March, when I went for an outpatients appt and ended up beind admitted!
Whilst in hospital I was on Heparin shots and 10mg warfarin for 2 days, then my levels went too high, so nothing for 2 days. Then heparin shots and 5mg for 2 days, then 7mg for 2 days, then local clinic and INR was 2.0, so 8mg for 5 days.
Then I went back for another test and INR was over 8.0, so nothing again for 2 days.
Back again today and INR 3.6, so nothing again for another 2 days and back Friday for my next test.
I realise it will take a while to stabalise, but what worries me is that over the last 3 days my leg is swelling more and more.
Originally my right calf was swollen, now it is my thigh as well, and also my left leg.
Is this "normal"?
What should I expect with regards to swelling?
When 1st diagnosed the swelling was near enough unoticable. Now it's swollen and the skinn feels tight.
Anyone got any advice? It would be much appreciated as this is all very ... read more

IVC filter migration

I was diagnosed with May Thurner syndrome and multiple DVT in 2008. I subsequently had stents placed and a retrievable IVC filter placed. After 2 attempts to remove the filter, it was determined that it is unretrievable due to positioning. I was recently hospitalized with pneumonia where a chest x ray was done. On the xray, the radiologist noted that there was a metal object in the area of the pulmonary arteries. I was discharged from the hospital, but am now concerned that the metal may be a fragment of the IVC filter. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Does Warfarin cause itching and rashes?

Anyone else experiencing this? I have some "itchy spots" developing. On my back, neck, shoulders, and now just recently a couple of spots on my stomach. My head has started to itch. And now some mild rash in my armpits. Now what do I do? I think it is related to Warfarin as I found this other thread:

http://www.topix.com/forum/drug/coumadin/TOGIBS5VONLMAELJH

Can I get a substitute anticoagulant? I don't think I continue like this as it seems to be spreading....... all started after about 6 months on Warfarin

I have had right leg for a while now had an ultrasound which was negative for a clot, I have pain when standing in the back of my thighs though its more in the right than left and I am now having pain in my right calf some when I stand. Also my left calf started to hurt today too. I also have pain in the back of my thigh when I straighten my right leg out and I have also been having back pain for 2 weeks now. I have no redness or swelling, does this sound like a DVT?. I don't see my doctor again until Tuesday and I don't know whether I should try and see her before then or what.

DVT after spinal fusion

I had a anterior lumbar interbody fusion/posterior lumbar interbody fusion on Feb. 1. For the first 4 days I was on heparin and then sent home with TED hose to wear for the next week until I was able to walk around more. Flash forward 8 weeks. I have been having loss of sensation in my pinky toe on my right leg along with swelling of my calf and foot, especially when I am walking around. My ortho surgeon's P.A. called me back today and told me that it was nothing to worry about unless my calf started to hurt really bad and was red/hot. Should I be more concerned? I know that ortho surgical patients are more prone to DVTs. I can't find any other reason why my leg/foot would be swelling. Thanks in advance for your help!!

I have not been able to find a good source of medical advice regarding nutritional supplements to prevent DVT recurrence.

Some of many possible nutritional supplements include ginger, aspirin, garlic, Vitamin E, Omega 3 fish oil, Co Enzyme Q10, purple grape juice and red wine.

I would appreciate If somebody can shed some light on this subject or can identify some knowledgeable sources or accepted studies.

Been dealing with right leg pain that comes and goes and sometimes is in my left leg. Had an Ultrasound 3 weeks ago which was normal and the pain went away but came back Saturday night went to the ER today they looked at my leg and performed a homans test? which was negative, and they said since I have had this pain before and also since my back has been hurting me for a week that the pain is due to Sciatica. But could it be DVT? Or is it safe to say I don't have DVT?

I was diagnosed with a dvt over a month ago. On february 3. I have been
therapeutic once only for it to fall to a 1.3. They put me back on arixtra shots,
which from what I understand is the same thing as lovenox. I'm only back to a

eating a lot of vitamin k. Please help,

3 weeks on coumadin, leg pain

I've been on coumadin for about 3 weeks now....my inr has been a little high-
peaked at 3.7 at one point. I have 4 clots in my left leg, and I went almost 2
months with unexplained and quite severe ankle pain before they made the
diagnosis. Now, I'm having pain in my groin and hip on the left. I'm nit sure if it's
due in part to the fact that I've been limping for so long, stressing joints in ways
they aren't used to, or if this is from the coumadin. The pain in the groin almost
feels like the pain one experiences from a shot to the groin (I'm a guy).

It's bad enough that I have to find just the right position to lay in, or I can't
sleep.

Any thoughts?

Hi! I was diagnosed with a clot about a month ago. Overall I am feeling better. On coumadin, wearing compression sock, elevation, blah blah blah. I have been taking Tylenol 3 but for the last few days have not taken any during the day. I have still been taking one at night to help me sleep due to discomfort. The past 4 nights I have woken up in the middle of the night with extreme pain and discomfort. To the point of not being able to sit still and crying. I don't get it because I feel fine during the day...almost no pain at all. Why does it all come crashing down at night?

calf pain-blood clot?

I have been taking Microgestin (birth control) for about three months and have had off and on calf pain. At first I thought it was from a potassium def. but I have been been eating healthier and taking vitamins daily. I am currently experiencing calf pain and am concerned it could be from a blood clot. Unfortunately I took my birth control pill for the day already then started experiencing the pain. It is not severe but feels like a charlie horse. I am going to Planned Parenthood in the morning but am feeling more and more worried. I don't have redness or swelling but I know it could still be a blood clot. I would go to the er but I have no insurance. Tomorrow morning seems like it couldn't come any sooner. What are the chances I am correct in my assumption, can I do anything tonight to help it besides elevating my leg, walking and not crossing my legs? Also, how long can these things go on until it's a life or death emergency? I assume there's no way to tell and this is worth a tri... read more

yet another DVT newbie

Hello-

I was diagnosed with DVT about 2 weeks ago after nearly 2 months of severe pain in my left ankle. About a week before the diagnosis, my left ankle and calf had begun to swell up, and I was unable to walk for several days. Diagnosis came about as a result of the d-dimmer test and a subsequent ultrasound.

I was told there were 4 clots in the left leg, and 1 in the right. Most were below the knee, but not all.

I'm 42, health is so-so, and I have been pretty sedentary this winter. I will be seeing a hematologist soon to look for possible clotting disorders. There is no family history of DVT that I am aware of.

The day of my diagnosis was pretty stressful for me- this was completely unexpected, and I had no knowledge of DVT or it's treatment that would have enabled me to ask intelligent questions at the time.

Basically, I was given a shot of lovenox, 10mg of coumadin, and sent home with 4 prefilled lovenox needles and coumadin in 2 and 5mg tablets. I was put in co... read more

Been on warfarin since Sept 1st 2010. Took it for 6 months and recently was taken off of it March 1st. Been riding my mountain bike too. On the 17th my calf started to swell again. Went into ER and had them do an ultrasound. They didn't think I had a clot and said there was nothing new, but they gave me Lovenox. Called my IRadiologist on the 21st and told him my calf was hurting and I thought I had a clot. He said I didn't. Went to my Hemotologist yesterday and he rushed me in to get another ultrasound. They told me I have another clot from my calf to halfway up my thigh. My Hemotologist informed me that I am now a "lifer" with Warfarin! I am so excited, I want to throw a party! He told me in 2 to 3 years they might have a product out of Europe that is safer. Until then, Champagne wishes and Caviar Dreams and bloody cerebral hemorrhages..... ultimately we are all dead losers. It's just the "quality" of life while we are alive we try to improve. But in the end we all lose..... read more
