One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Warfarin Necrosis - Hospital Responsibility?

Hi, I'm just writing to see if anyone else has been in my situtation, or has any advice to offer. I reside in the UK. In May 2007, when I was 24, I was diagnosed with a spontaneous dvt in my right calf. Despite having no known risk factors or previous traumas, other than long dormant ulcerative colitis, I received no blood work other than the INR/D- Dimer tests necessary for diagnosis. I was quickly placed on Kelaxin, then Warfarin, 5mg for 6 months. I received no follow up with a hospital consultant or haemotologist Throughout this time, my INRs remained stable between 2-3. However, I began to develop red streaks, swellings and inflammations in both legs, which usually resolved themselves quickly, and discomfort and tightness in my waist and side area. My GP had no idea, suggesting possible phlebitis but cautioning that as my INR was stable, it was unlikely to be anything serious.

In November 2007, I stopped warfarin treatment. 3 weeks later I was diagnosed with 3 more clo... read more

What happens if clot doesn't disperse

I've just been rescanned 2 months after starting warfarin and my clot is still oclusive. Consultant said that he would have hoped to see some flow by now, and that as time passes, the likelihood of the clot dispersing becomes much less.
So what happens if it doesn't disperse? I appreciate other vessels try to compensate but will ther be any long term detrimental effects?

I am 60; had 2 DVTs since 11/08; very active; play Senior Softball from March till November every year; also Pump Iron; work outside all the time.

I was taken off of coumadin (4.5 daily) on 1.06.11; have a varicose vein in the area of the original blood clot that has been there for some time; showed this to my Primary Car Phys & the Hematologist & neither gave a negative comment. Both told me to remain active & keep Pumping Iron.

While you are on or when you were taken off of Coumadin; did the Doc tell you to wear a stocking? I was not instructed to do so; but since reading this forum will check tomorrow!!

Thanks John

Three months ago I was in the hospital with Pulmonary Embolism. Blood clots in both lungs and my left leg. They did a filter to stop the clots from moving up. Today the doctor did an ultra sound and said I have blood clots in three places in my left leg. He said they might have been able to suck the blood clot out, but he didn't think it would work now. The blood clots are embedded in.
What does that mean. Am I going to die if the leg gets bigger. They said there isn't much more they can do?
Has anyone out there had this problem?

hi just looking for a little advice. My abdomen has swollen from a size 12 last month to a size 16 and growing. I am not pregnant. I have 6 clots in left leg, 1 inferior jugular vein, 2 in left arm. I am on long term warfarin therapy and still throw clots. I went to the gp who did blood tests that showed normal liver and kidney function. I left without a lot of answers. My belly is swollen and painful and my legs are swelling. In the mornings I can have put on 5 kgs of fluid over night. Gp said because bllod tests normal it cant be clots. But I have read that you can normal liver function tests but clots in portal vein. Im also extremely fatigued and short of breath but no pain in lungs ( have had past pe in both lungs). Has anyone had experience with this. Should I be adgitating for further investigation. bcos I know look 6 months pregnant.

I live in the UK and I have to go into a clinic tomorrow to have a dye injected into me to see if I have blood clots in my arm. I have had to wait since Friday and it is very uncomfortable and very worrying.
Is the dye the best way of checking or would doppler or ultrasound be better?
I worry that I am being palmed off with a qick cheap test, not necessarily the best.
Also how do they do the dye test thing? Although my arm is sore and full of bloody bruises what if they dont find anything? Do I ask them to do it again or what?

Hi Im due to have a hip replacement (avascular necrosis)while waiting for op I developed a dvt and small pe in lung, vascular doc and hemotologist said it was fine to go ahead, but the anaethetist said I should go to the mainland and have a IVC filter inserted, he has said he would not do the op. I am so worried. I have lost all confidence in them, the anethestist feels I should be in a hospital that has everything at hand.dont know what to do, I have no private insurance, so it is NHS.

OFF Blood Thinners

ok, so i posted previously that i was diagnosed with DVT 2 weeks ago after a trip to the Emergency Room for leg pain. They ultrasounded me and found rather large blood clots in my leg below the knee. They sent me home with shots and pill blood thinners. 3days later i went to my regular DR who then took me off the thinners and said they dont make a difference in my case. I went to two more ulatrasounds, last being today. So the DVT is in a vein called the gastrocnious or something like and the clots are rather big. I was told that there is still a chance of the blood clot getting into the popetiel vein and going upward into my lungs, but that would happen anyways with or without blood thinners.. Still scared as hell... Anyone have any info or similar experiences? thanks...

How long after being diagnosed with a DVT should you worry about PTS? It has been 1 week and I"m still having agognizing pain in my leg. I've been seeing my regular doctor for pain issues and a pharmacist for monitoring my blood levels.

I just don't know what is normal anymore and feel I should be gradually feeling less pain which isn't happening. Everything I've read about PTS is that is is very debilitating.

Should I ask for a referral to some type of specialist? Should someone be prescribing me compression stockings to help with the pain? I just want to feel normal again.

May Thurner's Syndrome My DVT and PE Story
( My Blog-http://deenyssimplejoys.blogspot.com )

Back in August I ended up in the hospital for 7 days with an occlusive DVT (Deep
Vein Thrombosis which in layman's terms is a blood clot in the deep veins) From
my groin (maybe abdomen too can't remember now exactly all they said) all the way
down my left leg which then caused a pulmonary embolism.
The last week in August started I guess as normal. A few days earlier in the
middle of the night I tripped and smashed my knee into the tiled garden tub. It was
late at night and dark . I didn't think nothing of it. It was sore. I noticed the next day
the knee was swollen. It didn't really hurt all that much. I did a web search that said
there are a lot of veins around the knee and when knees get hurt they tend to swell
then veins just reroute. It was minimally sore and I could walk on it. I really di... read more

testing for clotting disorders

My clotting issues started out with superficial clots in the greater saphenous vein in my left leg in 2003. I was on birth control pills, which I stopped immediately (and 12 months later welcomed my fifth child into the world). I saw a vascular surgeon and was told that there is nothing that they can do, that the reflux in the veins was only minor. I sought out a 2nd opinion, and he came to the same conclusion.

Last year I had a DVT in my popliteal vein, but was fortunate that I caught it before it became a PE..ever since the superficial clots, I've been hyper-vigilant with leg pain. I did 6 months of coumadin, which concluded in July.

At the end of November, I had another superficial clot, which produced symptoms almost identical to the DVT (talk about being scared to death). I once again consulted a vascular surgeon (different than the original 2). He repeated what they had said, but reported back to my doctor that he felt that a hematological consult may be called for... read more

Stopping Coumadin

So this is day 1 of many I hope not taking any sort of blood thinner. I had a DVT in July 2009 and have been on coumadin with regular INR checks since. I am one of the ones where the DVT came from nothing and has not returned, I blame smoking which I have quit since. Both my family MD and the hemo specialist advises I get off the coumadin as I am 41 yrs old, active, high metabolism...so I stopped the thinners yesterday. Does anyone have any advice with regards to diet, excersise or over the counter drugs to help prevent a reoccurance???

Hello

I have just been diagnosed with a blood clot in my hand. I have been placed on Warfarin(sp). My hand and forearm are currently very swollen and look terrible and I have been told even after the clot is gone my hand and forearm may still look the same if the veins have been too damaged! What is the likelihood of something like that happening? And is there any recourse if that is the case?

Factor v leiden awareness

I was diagnosed with factor v leiden about a year ago. My mom and older sister also have it along with a few more of my relatives. I have not had complications with it this far and hopefully it will stay that way. However my loved ones have. My mom was a pioneer of sorts as she was one of the first to be diagnosed with it in the city we live in in the 80s and it has been an up hill battle ever since getting the treatment and attention needed. She has been hospitalized many times and has almost lost her leg. It has come to my attention that there is very little awareness out side of the people who have it or have loved ones that do. As a result not much has progressed since the mid 80s. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any major organizations promoting awareness or raising money towards the issue other then lifeblood.

I had outpatinet surgery for a miscarriage about 3 weeks ago....not alot of down time, but I was pretty much inactive for a few weeks...also I was taking progesterone hormones for 1 week. About a week ago I was trying to strech and get active again and I did overstreach and think I pulled something in my left leg...the next day behind my knee was swollen a little and hurt...since then my whole leg aches....i went to my obgyn for a follow up to surgery and she looked at it and said she didnt see redness or knot in leg...didnt seem concerned....the next day the swelling was gone.....two days later it came back and ached in my thigh and calf and foot....non specific aches....no sharp pains and the aches are all over my leg...no redness, no discoloration, just aches in leg and slight swelling behind my knee that is now gone as of this morning again..... can anyone put my mind at ease....i guess i just need to worr... read more
