One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Heart rate at rest

I went to my doctor last week after being diagnosed with DVT and PE's 2 1/2 weeks earlier. Spent 7 days in the hospital, 3 of with in ICU.

Anyhow the doc put a pulse meter on my finger and we walked the hallways of his office building and my heart was at 105-110 BPM and he said that a normal person at my fitness level should be at a 70 BMP. Doc said that my clot is cutting of circulation so my heart must work harder and I should have a normal pulse rate within 4 months.

I think part of the reason my pulse rate is so high is because of the tremendouse anxiety and fear of suddenly getting so sick like this andded on are the side effects of Warfarin and serious marital problem that started before I was diagnosed with this condition.

Does anyone here have a high resting heart rate because of their condition?

Hi everyone
Was diagnosed with occlusive DVT in May in 3 veins and have been told they will never go away now. If a clot does not dissolve in 1 month then basically you are stuck with it. Am off warfarin as i believe the side effects were worse than the clot. It all started about 1 month after taking warfarin. Swelling in the ankle joint and severe pain on walking. After xray 4 months later and inflammatory arthritis had set in and 1 month later no better, still hobbling big time.Is there any one from Brisbane Aust out there, would love to hear from you and see where your at.

Warfarin vs coumadin

Has anyone switched from warfarin sodium to coumadin?
I've had headaches ever since I've been on warfarin & read somewhere that
there's a dye in the warfarin that isn't present in the coumadin & this may be
responsible for headaches ?
Just curious x

Pain in the thigh

I have pain in the backside of my left thigh since yesterday (6 inches above my knee). I have had 2 episodes of DVT 18 months back in the same leg. This does not feel like DVT, has anyone experienced pain in this area and diagnosed as DVT? Do we have veins running in the back side of thigh, because whenever I have done the ultrasound, the sonologist always checked the front side of thigh for clots.

I've been on warfarin for almost a month, I've had the loss of appetite, food
tasting different, tingling, aches & pains, but the headaches are horrible
grumbling things, usually on my right(dvt) side. I take 500mg Tylenol sometimes
for them as my Dr said this was fine, but I don't like to.
How does anyone else cope with them ?

High INR and UTI??

Apologies for the "personal" nature of this post, be warned!

So, I am studying abroad here in Spain, after suffering DVT in my left leg at the end of May 2009 due to MTS and FVLeiden. I will be taking Coumadin now or a year, increased from 6 months, due to the fact that I am abroad.

Since I have been here, my blood levels have been high. My diet has not changed drastically, nor have I been consuming a lot of alcohol. Not every night and when I do, I rarely have more than one. Plus, in Spain, you can order "cortos" which are tiny little beers.

Anyways, last night, I noticed that there was blood in my urine, that coupled with the fact that my back had been hurting for about a week (I thought maybe a pulled muscle) led me to head straight to the hospital thinking I was bleeding internally from my kidneys.

My INR was 7.02, so they put me on an IV drip of Vit K which brought me back down to 2.4 within two hours.

As for the blood in my urine, they said I have a UTI and ... read more

'S' Stands For Surprise: Anticoagulant Plays Unexpected Role In Maintaining Circulatory Integrity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2009) Protein S, a well-known anticoagulant protein, keeps the blood flowing in more than one way, discovered researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The protein contributes to the formation and function of healthy blood vessels.

The researchers found that mice lacking protein S suffered massive blood clots, but also had defective blood vessels that allow blood cells to leak into the surrounding tissue.

"We had anticipated finding clotting problems, but the prominent role of protein S in the development and maintenance of blood vessels was completely unexpected," says first author Tal Burstyn-Cohen, Ph.D., a former post-doc in the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory and now at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel.

Tooth extractions!

Dear Forum,

Just a quick bit of advice with reference to the dreaded dentist and extraction of a tooth whilst on warfarin.

Had severe toothache for a while until it became unbearable and then i had to bite the bullet and had to visit as it was an abscess. Phoned up and explained my scenario with warfarin and INR and he was keen for me to test my INR prior to the surgical procedure. I have the coaguchek XS machine and tested in the dentists seat and it came back as 2.6, He said this was fine as he wont do dental procedures if the INR is above 3.5. I was anxious as i was thinking "I am going to bleed to death" as i feel that is what most of us do think!!

The tooth was pulled out and the socket stitched also as this will help clotting and aid the healing process, It was a relatively painless experience and i now have no hesitation to visit on warfarin. I had some bleeding overnight but nothing as major as i had imagined.

Hope this can be of help to the many on here.

Protein/meat intake and warfarin dose

Hi everyone, I have been trying to figure out why my INR has just dropped from a steady number for over a month (between 2 and 3), and then suddenly plummeted to 1.4 - increasing only to 1.5 after a week on a higher dose.

I was trying to think, what have I done differently? Then I realised the only thing is that I was a vegetarian when I was diagnosed and I recently started eating meat again (not sure why, think I was so hungry one day I lost the plot!). So my question is, could eating meat have a negative effect of the anticoagulating effect of my warfarin? Maybe if I was always a meat eater I would have had a higher dose all along, but I was stable at 6mg/day as a vegetarian.

I've gradually gone veggie again this week, as it suits me better anyway, so we shall see what tomorrow's INR test brings. Been on 7.5mg/day for a couple of weeks now. Can't think of any other reason, had a course of antibiotics but INR stayed stable for a couple of weeks after i'd finished the course.

Compression stocking advice

I have had two DVTs now. Was on Coumadin for 6 months and within 8 months had much more severe clot ankle to groin+. I have been on Coumadin now 3 months and have severe swelling in leg ankle to thigh, and they check again for new clots. Have vein issues and was given support hose Knee high. Now swelling is pushed to above knee. If I wear tube sock over hose i still get pitting from them. Not as bad with out the hose. Only 47 and don't wish for 3rd DVT or PE. Question is if blood is being pushed up to knee and that is where clots really started what is the good. Swelling above knee. What are my choices/options

Hi
I had a dvt 3 weeks ago after 2 long haul flights in 10 days to UK & back to FL, I
had a cat scan that showed my lungs were clear but I'm so worried that the clot
may still move although mr Dr thinks it unlikely. I'm on 5mg warfarin 5 days then
7.5 for 2 until they get it stabilized, I was on lovenox sub cu shots for 10 days ,
I've been off those for 10 days now( still got some bruising).
I cant recommend compression stockings high enough, as my pain & swelling
has reduced greatly since wearing it.

I got my DVT 10 weeks ago when 25 weeks pregnant. The swelling and pain subsided after around 2 weeks. I am now nearly 36 weeks pregnant and for the last few days my DVT leg has swelled again. Its not painful or anything but is definitely bigger than the non DVT leg. I am on a high dose of low molecular weight heparin and am having my bloods monitored very closely. Obviously I am heavier now and there is much more pressure on my legs. Its quite frustrating. I really want to give my leg the best chance of recovery. I have worn the stockings religiously although have since discovered that the hospital TEDS stockings arent the best.
Should I be worried that the swelling has come back or do you think that being heavily pregnant is most likely the cause. Is there any other ladies out there who had DVTs while pregnant who experienced this. At this stage I really feel the pregnancy is preventing my leg from recovering. I just want to give my leg the best chance of recovery I can but thats... read more

Dietary Needs for DVT/PE

Hi, I am fairly new to this all. My hubby got gastro and after vomiting for a few hours developed leg pain and then later that day chest pain. We went to the doctor just to get him some meds so he could keep fluid down at least (thinking he was dehydrated) and the doctor luckily checked his knee and sent us direct to the hospital. 36 hours and lots of tests later and they have discovered a blood clot in his leg part of which has broken off and gotten lodged in his lower lung. Hospital is still concerned as the pain is gradually moving higher in his chest. He's a healthy guy, never smokes, rarely drinks and tends to eat whatever I cook (which I try to keep healthy). Is there anything I can do at home cooking wise that can help him with this and not cause additional problems? Any foods I should introduce or cut out? Currently he is in hospital on warfarin, he's been told when he is released he will be on tablets for at least three months. Currently the doctors are trying to w... read more

Chances of a DVT while on Lovenox?

I'm thinking of having another baby ... and will be on Lovenox since I already have a DVT from a previous pregnancy. I'm worried about getting another DVT. Does anyone know the chances of getting another clot while already on blood thinner? I am only MTHFR, no other clotting disorders. My Dr.'s think my first clot was strictly due to the pregnancy. Also, my current clot is pretty much gone, no longer visable on ultrasound. Thanks!
