One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Is there any runners out there. I had a Dvt in my leg in may of 2007 now I am recovering from a PE and will be on coumadin for at least 6 months. I was wondering if anyone has any info on Running after a PE. I was able to run after the dvt and actually did a marathon, I'm concerned about running after the one in the lung. I have what they call deficient S Protien.
Thanks

Who's Had Clot-Busters?

For those of you who check in regularly, I'd be interested in starting a thread regarding how many of us were treated with catheter-directed tPA or urokinase.

While I was in the hospital I remember my hemo coming in on day two and mentioning something about a "clot-buster" but grandly cautioning that a side effect was intracranial hemmorage and that being young I would not want to risk that happening. It was never really presented as an option to me and I have since come to find out through research on my own that it is a fairly common procedure, especially on larger clots (mine is groin to ankle). I'm very curious now how many people on here were treated with thrombolysis.

Hi, I am a lady of 60+ and I recently had major surgery for arterial embolisms. There were 3 clots, one in each leg and one in my tummy on the what is called the saddle (the part where the artery splits to go down the legs) I woke up one morning with leg paralised and the other very cold, my foot and toes of the left leg were purple. Since surgery the wounds have taken a long time to heal. I am on Warfarin and have been told this does retard healing of wounds.

My question is: Can these clots come back even if I am on warfarin? Has anyone had this form of clot and what is the prognosis? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Many thanks

Laura

Has anybody lost a significant amount of weight and noticed a big improvement in how their dvt leg feels after the weight loss?

I know that if you exercise you are better off in all realms, but I want to know if someone has lost a bunch of weight and their dvt leg feels much better as a result of weight loss.

ive had issues for years with swelling of my left leg. My left ankle is where i first noticed it about 4 years ago. now its gone as far as my calf... up to my knee. I have asked dr after dr about this problem... for years ive heard the same thing. Its varicose veins.. dont worry about it. well... i AM worried. ive BEEN worried. but no one seems to do anything about it. they tell me .. wear support hose. well... last summer, while floating around in the pool, my leg started aching really bad... i pulled it out of the water and saw that a vein near my ankle had burst and i had a large raised green mass there where my ankle used to be.
i went to the ER.. they did a scan to see if blood was flowing normally near my groin etc... and all seemed fine.

well.. a month or so ago i noticed my leg swelling even worse, the swelling never ever goes away. and ive experienced pains ive never had. in my groin, down my entire leg, and it FEELS vascular. i dont know how else to describe it.. its... read more

Now after taking Coumadin for 10 plus weeks I have some unwanted side effects. Mainly muscle and vein pain, shortness of breathe. But the good news is the PE's have dissolved or disappeared. Sure is tempting to reduce or go off the Coumadin.
I have not seen any posts about side effects in this forum, but have read about the possibilities at Drugs.com and other websites. Anybody on this forum with the same side effects?? What are you doing to reduce the side effects?

Hi everyone. I feel so sad i got DVT and PE at just 18. It was so unusual. Last august, i had noticed over a few weeks my breathing was a little weird, i got out of breath a bit more than normal. Anyway, eventually my hip started to twinge a little, sort of in my groin. The weird thing was it didnt feel muscular, sort of a deeper pain. I didnt know about DVT at the time, so didnt think much of it, but then i had a sudden episode when i couldnt breathe properly, i kept trying to catch my breath. It was awful. It didnt last that long, but when i went to the doctors i was admitted to the hospital straght away and the CT scan showed i had bilateral PEs. As soon as i got into hospital i didnt have any more breathing problems, and not since. During the time i was in there my leg pain got worse. It travelled down my thigh, then into my calf over a few days. I was bed stricken in the end. I had an IVC filter put in and was started on warfarin. I have been on warfarin ever since.

Maybe some of our leg pain is because of the Coumadin??
At another Healthboard, Coumadin is mentioned for leg and other body pain.
One of my Doctors says Coumadin has no side effects, LOL

Just a small request. Please be careful not to copy your name over top of the last person on the list. Add yourself after the last name.
Thanks.

Low Dose BCP After DVT

I had a DVT four years ago I got it while I was flying with a cast on my leg. I was also taking the birth control pill at the time. After treating the DVT, I was tested for clotting problems and everything came back normal. I have no genetic predisposition for clotting problems. Since then, I have not had any problems. I had been taking the pill for medical reasons and sometimes think about resuming a low dose pill such as Loestrin. Has anyone ever resumed the pill. If so did you simultaneously take coumadin at the same time to mitigate the risk of another clot?

I tried the mini-pill but it made things worse. It seems like all of the treatments for heavy periods involve the BCP. I know some have recommended an IUD but I feel very uncomfortable about that--especially since some women experience prolonged bleeding with the IUD--and that is exactly what I would like to avoid.

If anyone has advice, I would welcome it. I am 31 and am tired of suffering from horrible period... read more

Should they have looked for PEs?

I was diagnosed with my DVT with an ultrasound. It is (was?) extensive - running from my abdomen to my ankle. However, there was no testing or ultrasound done to look for PEs. Should there have been? Would it make a difference and should I ask to have it done? In reading the forums, it looks as if most people were checked upon diagnosis and I am wondering why I was not. Thanks.

How long has your swelling lasted?

I had a DVT that ran from my ankle to my abdomen (left leg). My leg is an inch to an inch and a half bigger than the other leg. This is the case from my thigh all the way to my ankle. How long has or did your swelling last? Mine seems to be stagnant and I am thinking that it will be this size for awhile.

That being said, I am so frustrated with clothing/pants because NOTHING fits correctly anymore. Everything fits very oddly and I am having a hard time finding bottoms. Besides skirts/dresses any tips or advice or links to sites that you like to shop from?

I did post a thread similar to this but it didn't get much response so I thought I'd try again. Sorry for the duplication and thanks for your feedback.

im 29 yrs old, just had foot and ankle surgery 2 months ago and am feeling sharp pains in both legs at times. ALong with that, my knees are hurting. They hurt before the surgery because of a situation with my foot and ankle.
PLease tell me what I am feeling today isn't blood clots, or is it? Or is it something else
I have to remind you that I am currently in foot therapy that streaches the leg and foot muscles which my be the reason for the aches and pains, but I don't know.
