One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

I'm just curious! Do any of you know if there are any antibiotics that
do not work well with Xarelto? I get uti frequently and normally take
Bactrim for that.

Nicotine Patch

Just curious if anyone else developed DVT after long term use of the nicotine
patch? I was diagnosed with my first clot in May 2014 and I have given a
tremendous amount of thought to the cause. I have not had a recent surgery,
injury, or traveled anywhere. I am not on birth control. Neither of my parents or
siblings have clotted. I am not overweight and I am fairly active. I am 37 and
otherwise healthy. The one culprit I can identify is the nicotine patch. I quit
smoking and have used the patch daily for 3 years. The patch is deemed healthier
than smoking but nicotine is not without it's faults. From what I have read, it's
nicotine that restricts blood vessels and makes them more prone to clotting. Has
anyone experienced or heard of the nicotine patch potentially causing blood

DVT calf 21 weeks pregnant-lots of questions!

Hi everyone!
After 3.5 months of my calf hurting (initially due to injury, I'm a distance runner.)
and FIVE ultrasounds, they found a DVT in my lower left calf. I wasn't admitted-
only put on Lovenox 2x/day. CT scan was negative for PE. I see my hematologist
on Wednesday but a few questions for the group:

Is it normal to just be put on Lovenox?

When will this calf pain go away?

The ER dr encouraged me to walk as much as I could. Does this advice sound
right or should I be taking it easy?

I'm paranoid about even bumping my calf right now. Can I dislodge the clot from
accidentally bumping it?

This anxiety following the DVT sucks. It's not a question but a mere statement. I'm
very grateful that they caught it and I'm here though!

Thank you! :)

When can you feel safe again

I was admitted to the hospital 41 days ago with DVT and PE (stayed there for 5 days). Came home on Coumadin and lovenox but was never able to get the INR to settle down so now I'm on xarelto. I go from the double dose to the single dose tomorrow. That means I will have been on xarelto for 22 days.

A couple of days after starting xarelto the unbelievable calf pain subsided but the whole leg and foot swelling remains about the same.

Does there come a point with time or symptoms that you can be pretty confident that there is no longer a time bomb waiting to blow?

One of the most difficult parts of DVT/PE has been the uncertainty. Does the risk go down or go away in time - when can one feel safe or safer again?

I was diagnosed with DVT in my left calf. They found one small clot. They of
couse did dopplers on both legs and found none in my right leg. I have been on
Xeralto since hospital stay and they told me I should not form any clots. My
question is... I have been feeling a slight tenderness in my right calf and
concerned that they either missed it on Doppler or that I an still forming. It
doesn't feel anything like the clot I had in my left! This is more like a twinge! I may
be panicking! Has this happened to any of you?

Can I get clots on Lovenox?

Hello every one,
First I like to say I am so very thankful for this site/forum. It has saved my life with the posts I have read this past year. Unfortunately, now I am having another problem. It is as follows:
I was on Warfarin before at a very high dose and my blood was not getting thin at all. I had asked my medical provider to give me the name brand for it was fear that the generic was not good enough. Well of course they wouldn't do to costs which I don't feel is right and I even offered to pay the difference. To no avail it didn't work. I was still getting clots on the warfarin and was at 30 aday. I went to see a Hemo. and he placed me on Lovenox. I felt better and it seemed to be working. If I went off of it I would get a clot. Now I have been on a therapy of Lovenox for a year and one month now. This past two weeks I have been feeling very ill. I am having all the symptoms I had when all this started accept for the pain in the calf when walking. My signs and symptoms aren't... read more

42 year old male, in pretty good shape. I am a triathlete, and did an
Ironman last November in Arizona. Today I am limited to brisk walks
until I get the clearance from the doc (not that I could do much
anyway). about 7 weeks ago started getting shortness of breath on
exercise, progressed to while at rest. Several misdiagnoses,
bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, etc etc etc. until July 1 when I went
to the ER with severe pain on breathing (ironically, both my GP and
pulmonologist declared me in perfect health that morning, maybe a
touch of exercise induced asthma).

Diagnosed with multiple bilateral PEs. Searching for the cause, no
current evidence of DVT or upper body clots, all blood tests (factor
V, Antithrombonin 3, protein c/s, homoocystine, 20210 mutation) are
normal. Cancer screening and liver tests negative, CT of
pelvis/abdomen show no clots there (not an MRI though)

I have done some research while off work and discovered that endurance

in early march of this year I fell down while on the job. I hit the ground pretty hard but got back up and proceeded on my current task. The next day I had a bruise on my leg and it was starting to feel kind of stiff. the day after it did not feel much better and was starting to swell a little , the day after that it swelled more and was starting to hurt like hell. Long story short: I went to my clinic , x-rayed for broken bones, then to cardio where i received a sonogram and then they sent me to ER where they in turn told me i had a full length clot from my hip to my foot. the cardio surgeon told me go home, rest for a day and take blood thinners and percacets for pain. I could go to work as soon as i felt better. this was the prescribed treatment of modern medicine and the clot would go away in time, check in with my clinician PA or Doctor for follow up. Two days later i was back at work and it was afternoon, the pain was getting bad and I refused to take the percacets on the job. ... read more

I have DVT of the main vein of of the brain. I am 21 years and currently
taking coumadin. Two questions:

1. About how long does it take for the clot to be dissolved back into
the blood stream?

2. Besides taking the coumadin, is there anything I can do personally to
help dissolve the clot?

Vascular Surgery - Remove DVT

Hi, I have been under the care of a hematologist for 2 years for a blood clot running from my groin to my calf. I take ten/mg of coumadin a day. I would like to rid myself of this clot --- there has not been any change since I've gotten it -- multiple ultrasounds show no change.

I've been doing some research and saw there is a procedure where a vascular surgeon can remove the clot. Has anyone out there done this or discussed it with their doctor. I am wondering why my hematologist has never brought this up --my hematologist basically told me there isn't any other option and that my body had to break the clot down on it's own --- which it clearly has not done.

I appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this topic. I am thinking of going to my primary care to get a referral to discuss my case w/ a vascular surgeon.

I have Factor V and previous history of PEs, DVTs etc. Had D-DIMER done
Monday following an increase of symptoms. It came back at 380. Tuesday, after 3
therapeutic treatments of clexane over 36 hours it was suddenly down to 206.
Testing done at the same place, same conditions etc. No one can explain
how/why it dropped so quickly. Anyone have any experience or explanations?

I have chronic DVT/PE, and after my last episode I became a Coumadin
"lifer." I'm resistant; my standard dose is 10-10-7.5 repeating. Last
week I got cellulitis and my gp put me on Keflex (I'm allergic to the
'cillins), but I had a reaction to that, too, which left doxycycline
as the safest option. It has a rep for dangerously raising INR, so
vasc Dr lowered my dose to 7.5. Checked INR and it was 1.7, so back to
regular dose. Rechecked today (2 days later) and it was 1.6. I leave
for the beach tomorrow and Dr is faxing an order for a recheck to a
lab there. I had a weird tingling/heat feeling in my DVT leg (though
little pain and nothing at all like my DVT pain) yesterday and chcest
pain off and on yesterday and today. I'm waiting for the Dr to call
back to ask if I need to wear TEDs in the car or if frequent breaks
are enough, and I'll mention it if/when they do. I'm hoping someone
who's experienced week long below range scores in the past can help

DVT in Groin during Pregnancy.

Hi, one week ago today I was admitted to hospital with a hugely swollen,
discoloured and fluid filled left leg. After an ultrasound, I was told that I had a
large clot in my left groin. I was started on daily heparin injections as I am 28
weeks pregnant. After 4 nights in hospital, I have returned home and have been
told to rest and elevate my leg. My mobility is severely affected; I can really only
manage to get around the house and even that is very painful. I am taking
paracetemol every 6 hours for the pain. Can anybody tell me about their
experiences of a clot in the groin in pregnancy? I'm petrified that the pain and
immobility are going to be long term problems. I've no idea how I'll cope with a
baby when I currently can't stand long enough to shower. Can anyone advise on
when I might hope to see some improvement? Thanks for any help.
