One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Foot Numbness

Has anyone dealt with numbness in their DVT foot after being taken off coumadin? I had a DVT in Jan 2010 and a superficial clot in Nov 2010 in the same leg. I have not been diagnosed with PTS, but I experience quite a bit of pain in my leg (bad enough that I had ultrasounds done to confirm that the veins were clear.) Now I am experiencing numbness in the sole of my foot, running from toes to heel, and my ankle is somewhat swollen. The numbness is constantly there, but the swelling increases throughout the day, even though I am wearing my compression stocking, and there is is an achy soreness by evening. I am a teacher, so I spend the biggest part of the day on my feet.

My leg is not red, there is no other swelling in my leg, and the pain is not any worse than normal. So I am not too concerned that it's another clot. The first appt that I can get with my doctor without having to miss school is not for another 2 weeks, so I was hoping maybe someone would have some insight and... read more

I have had DVT for about 8 years now starting when I was 30 years old. It has been a
life altering struggle to say the least. For about a year now I have had what appears to
be white atrophy on my lower ankle. There are hard, white spots that are sore to the
touch. I am going to get this confirmed by the doctor tomorrow, but I was wondering if
anyone else has this and how you heal it and deal with it.

Doctors in Colorado?

Hello all,

I am approaching 40 and have 4 separate dvts starting at around age 20. The first one was after I was really sick and laid in bed for several days. The 3rd one was after a very long trip to India and back. The other 2 really don't have any explanation. Well, after the last one, my doctor has sentenced me to a lifetime of anti-coagulants. I have had plenty of bloodwork done to determine if there is a reason for me to have this happen, especially since they started when I was young. I don't smoke.
A lifetime of blood thinners is just not something I'm ready to accept. I don't want to live as if I'm extra fragile.
My questions, does anyone know of a Doctor in Colorado that is especially knowledgeable about DVTs, causes, and prevention by other means? Thanks.

I am 34 and had my first unprovoked PE two years ago. I was on coumadin for the first 6 months and went off it because I wanted to be able to play competitive soccer again (and I had a hard time being therapeutic INR )
I played soccer for about 4 months and after some long travel I had a second unprovoked PE. I have been on Xarelto for about 4 months.
I started playing soccer again recently although at a much less competitive level.
I'm sure my Doctor would not be a fan of this so my question is does anyone have any experience through their doctor regarding light contact sports and Xarelto?

I know it's always a danger but playing is my release... Anyone who plays a sport they love I'm sure understands.

i just had 12 hours sleep and am still completely exhausted and feel weak and

i have been having shortness of breath just from walking ever since i had blood
drawn last thursday - i am wondering could it be a clot from the iv or from
sitting in the er for 6 hours?

my calf hurts especially when squatting or putting weight on it get a stabbing
crushing pain. also getting tingling and numbness in that leg.

dr said no swelling = no dvt.
had a normal d dimer but still not convinced.
want a scan of lungs but had one 6 months ago dr say too much radiation
because im only 20 years old.

also want an ultrasound but hospital does not scan calf area only thigh, which
isn't helpful.

have an appt with cardiologist tomorrow and want to ask gp for ultrasound.
however i am worried the clot will have moved by that time.

i do not feel myself at all. im only 20 and feel like crying because nobody will

Diagnosed DVT 1 Week Ago and SEVERE calf cramp

Hey everybody, I am new here. I have a question for the experienced or non-experienced if you can relate or can shed any light.

Okay, this sucks for one. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

I went to the ER with a swollen leg about a week ago and they diagnosed me with DVT in my left leg. They admitted me, placed me on Heparin and Coumadin, I was there for 4 days, and now I am home on just Coumadin with INR of 2.4. I have to be on Coumadin for a year, so they say.

My question:

I have the worst f-ing cramp / constant charlie horse in my left calf that I have ever had in my life. I literally cannot walk. I have to use crutches and a wheelchair to get up to my office.

I just got compression stockings today (they're sexy) and just started taking some Magnesium and Vitamin E.

Will this pain fade or go away or am I going to deal with this forever?

Please, any light at the end of this tunnel will help.

Ital 10 days.n I was on heparin & came home taking Warfrin - after a number of
months the doc. Took me off Warfrin- I don't know why!
This June 2013 I had pain in my left leg so after a a couple of days (awaiting a

slight red patches (10psize) at the outer calf! After the blood test was negative &
then a scan to make sure they sent me home with pain killers. The pain in my leg
did subside a little but not completely & my holiday was rather misareble as I
didnt do the family walks!
3 weeks ago I noticed the pain much more increased- then last week I was unable
to put my foot down to even walk 2yards without sever cramp like pain in my calf!

anyone had a false negative d dimer?

I've been having pain in my calf that worsens when squeezed or kneeling. I
have been feeling the spot moving upwards towards my groin.

i had a d dimer on Sunday night that came back at 215 cutoff is 250 at my
hospital. i have had it a few months ago and it's always around the 240 mark.
one time it was 267 so they actually scanned my lungs and did doppler and it
was negative. so with that in my history i doubt they will do anything else

I've also been feeling very breathless.
my doctor says the d dimer wouldn't miss it but im seeing people who had false
negatives and it scares me.

what are the chances the test could be inaccurate? im working myself into a
fret here.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT)

Wondering if anyone else has had Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).
Specifically the one that is sometimes called Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
Type 2 or Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (HITT). This type
causes abnormal antibodies to form and turn on your platelets and next thing you
know you end up with more thrombosis/blood clots than you started with. It is
often called an allergic reaction to Heparin, but it is not a true allergy. If you have
had it, have you ever been given Heparin or Lovenox again?

I had HIT when I got my DVT last year in my left leg. As a result I clotted up in my
left leg again. And my right leg clotted up too. I was told I was ďluckyĒ because I
just got leg clots and that the new clots didnít form in my brain, lungs, heart or
some other more serious place than my legs.

Iím asking because there is some thought that I may need to be put on Lovenox
for a month and Iím more than a bit worried about it.

can anyone tell me exactly what kind of shortness of breath they experienced
with pe? i feel like i can't get enough air and some pressure is on my chest.

hello, 2 weeks ago i went to a&e for chest pain and all blood results came back

since then I've developed leg pain but no swelling and in the last 2 days have
become quite short of breath - very unusual for me. i went to gp and
o2saturation was 98% so he was unconcerned. he refused to repeat d dimer
because he said it's not worth it. also because i wasn't as he put it 'gasping' for
breath he didn't take on that symptom.

the shortness of breath is really scaring me. i am considering going to a&e
again but taking my girl who cried wolf scenario from last week it's highly
likely i will see the same doctor and get the same answer - no repeat d dimer
and you're just being a neurotic young girl.

i am very concerned with this breathlessness and feel close to fainting at

Spontaneous PE and attending the Gym

Hi everyone,

Just over 3 weeks ago I was rushed into hospital with a PE on my right side. Reading
the Dr's notes when discharged 4 days later, the 2nd and 3rd lower pulmonary
arteries had filling defects causing a fluid trace and a collapse. The pain was scary,
in turn, made me have panic pain attacks due to not being able to breathe properly. I
am 34 years old and live a very healthy life-style, attending the gym 4 times a week.
I went back to work 3 days ago, but felt extremely dizzy and experienced bad chest
pains, so I went to get it checked out. The Dr said my lungs sound ok now and
having an INR of 3.5 (still high) there is no more risk of having clots, however, i've
read comments that users have formed clots whilst taking Warfarin. I had the
injections for 2 weeks, and have been taking the Warfarin 5mg on since the 2nd day
of being in hospital. Both my mum and sister have had DVT's but i'm hoping the
haematologist can find out what caused my PE... read more

Post-DVT Maintenance

I experienced a DVT in my left leg which gave way to a bilateral PE - for which I spent 5 days in the ICU and 18 months on warfarin. My hemo took me off warfarin and I've been free of recurrence. It was determined my clot was trauma induced after an injury and subsequent drain on the knee by the orthopedist.

My question isn't about current symptoms - but rather - I'm trying to find the best compression stockings to wear daily. I'd like to wear them to reduce residual swelling, and for the idea that they help blood flow and prevent future clots. I've worn thigh high open toe teds and regular (what I call 'grandma' stockings) compressions. I'm 30 years old, so I'm trying to be a bit more modern.

The problem is these stockings are annoying as all hell. They annoy me all day long. I was wondering if there were reliable brands that others can vouch for that I can look into purchasing. Any recommendations would help. Thanks.

Hi, this forum is quite helpful; I recently visited stanford Hosp. in California to apply to get in the Attract Study but could not get in because the onset of my symptoms of DVT were more than 2 weeks old; persons with recently identified clots should consider the Attract Study--it is being run throughout the United States (just search goggle on "attract study") but have to get in as soon as possible from iniital onset of symptoms. Best, Peter
