One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Natural Blood Thinners after Warfarin

Hi everyone, I had a DVT in my right leg (calf and lower thigh) 4 months ago and have
been on warfarin since. Today I had another ultrasound and my doc told me the clot
had dissolved completely and I could go off the warfarin.

Good news, however I'm a bit worried that I might get another DVT once my blood
thickens again. They didn't find any genetic blood thinning issues and blame the DVT
on the birth control pill that, of course, I'm not taking anymore. Still, I'm
apprehensive...

Does anyone know of or have experience with any natural blood thinners? I think
having a natural replacement would give me some peace of mind after going off the
warfarin.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Bloodshot eyes and flushed face

Hi
On Friday night I had over half of one of my eye balls was completely red. It was only the white bit, not the iris. I wasn't doing anything unusual or eating differently. It didn't hurt and only knew about it when a friend told me. Googled it and apparently normal and nothing to worry about. Its fading already. Then this morning, I woke up and my face is really flushed, a bit like roseacha. Again, I haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary to have caused this.
Could it be a warfarin side effect? Or a problem with bleeding? My last IRN was 2.6 a couple of weeks ago. Anyone had anything similar?

Intervention surgery on old clot

Has anyone had intervention surgery on an older clot like myself? My clot was two and a half months old at the time of my procedure. I like reading the discussions about recovery times and think that intervention surgery would be the way to go, but it doesn’t seem like anyone else is having it done on an older clot. I feel like I am all by myself and would like to compare notes with someone else.

I just want to get information out to everyone that interventions are being performed on older clots despite traditional treatment methods with anticoagulants. There are individuals doing other than this “gold standard” of treatment with an older dvt. Complete recanalization or opening of the vein rarely occurs with the body absorbing the clot such as the one I had in my upper leg.

My surgeon made it real clear that without the surgery I could have a myriad of problems down the road that might be avoided if I had the surgery. However, there were no real guarantees with such a... read more

Gunther Tulip & Pain?

Greetings,
and thank you for this forum. I was diagnosed with DVT-PE Dec 21 and received a gunther tulip on Dec 22 in my groin area. The pain from the blood clots has slowly gone away but I got severe pain in my back/hip directly behind the filter. Has anyone experienced any pain with the filter? I also have shooting pain through my groin and down the front of my thigh. I couldn't even walk for a week, went to the dr - he checked for bleeding and said there wasn't any. Still tremendous pain so I went to a Chiropracter, he seemed to help me some howerever wasn't happy about working on me. The pain remains but not as stabbing and I can get around. I feel funny in my groin area and back/hip. Any info from someone with a filter would be greatly appreciated. We have searched the net to no avail and found no helpful information.

What's your ongoing experience of NHS in UK

I live in Bury in North Manchester. Very briefly, a DVT in 2007 has left me needing to wear a stocking on my right leg. I was treated at the local hospital (Fairfield Hospital) and received my stockings through the Orthotics Dept. In 2008, I ordered replacement stockings in 2008 through the same department, paying the said prescription charges. I didn't go back to the NHS until 2010 (still very pissed off with them for the treatment I've received). Anyway in Sept 2010 I went to my GP after increasing pain through PTS. I was then after months seen at Manchester Royal Infirmary (about 15 miles away from my home) and eventually started seeing the vascular nurse there who arranged getting full length and knee length stockings. It's not really suitable because of the distance, but I was told that the Orthotics Dept. at Fairfield would not be supplying the stockings in the future. Apparently GP's are going to be supplying stockings in the future, or so I was told?

Options for removing blood clots

The best outcomes occur when you get the clot removed within two to
the most three weeks from onset. The specialist you need is an
Interventional Radiologist. You can find listings of them in the US on
this web site:

http://chronicdvt.com/find-a-doctor/

There are also some doctors who will work on old clots. There are some
early studies showing up to 90% or so of people with chronic clot are
getting some, to almost complete relief. For me however, I was
unlucky. I had the surgery and now my femoral vein is fully clotted.
worse than before. However I have less pain and can walk more as other
veins were cleared out. So it was still a slight positive.

Hey,
Has anyone had a DVT and PE's and then later had a baby? After having my now five month old son I always thought I would have more than one child. After having my son, my husband and I were already talking about having another one after a year. We really enjoy being parents. Anyone have a baby after DVT?

DVT in arm

There isn't much feedback on DVT in your arm, but that's what I have had. I'm still
on Warfarin and still don't understand why I got it. My arm is not looking that
great and after a month, after complaining, I was told I should have been wearing
a stocking from day one. My arm is still slightly 'bigger' than my left and the veins
are still a bit large. Is there anyone that is suffering the same?

coumadin and cysts

I am a 50 year old female of relatively good health who got a DVT from ankle to top of the thigh last Feb. They believe it was from a long flight to Hawaii and birth control pills. Since I have been on Coumadin 7.5 daily, I have noticed a definate increase in large cysts forming. The doctor says there is no corallation between the two; but I can't help but think it is my body trying to rid itself of the rat poison. Has anyone else experienced this?

Clot returning?

In March 2011 I was diagnosed with a dvt running from my thigh to my
abdomen 6 weeks after having a baby, I was on warfarin with no real
problems and was then taken off warfarin 6 weeks ago with scar tissue
and the vein still blocked.

Last week I got new compression socks in the size lower and they feel
better but tighter a few days after wearing them on my leg with the
clot started aching more when I took them off, the same way it did
this time last year when I took the socks off. This is one thing
causig me to worry. In addition to this around the same time my calf
has been aching more in general and there have been lots of little
pains in my inner thigh which is where I was having the pain when i
had the clot either aches or sharp tinges, they aren't too severe but
worrying all the same.

A few days ago after sitting for a while (with my leg raised)after
standing up I had a shooting pain, like a nerve pain going up the back
of my leg to my lower ... read more

Long term outcomes for DVT

Here is a bunch of information on long term outcomes for people with
DVT segmented by individual risk factors. It’s not very uplifting
stuff. If you have a new clot seriously consider having it removed
immediately. You need to act within DAYS. There are serious risks to
having it removed, and there are serious risks to not having it
removed. You need to proactively work with your doctors to determine
what is best for you.

Acupuncture and pain relief

Hi to you all.
After almost three since my dvt diagnosis, my specialist has now confirmed what I've known for ages.... that I have PTS and associated pain/discomfort. I was told to wear my compression stockings, drink plenty of water, don't sit still for too long etc etc- all of which I do- but that there is no effective long-term treatment for the ongoing pain.
So I was wondering if anyone has ever had a course of acupuncture treatment for the relief of pain associated with PTS? I'd prefer not to take any more medication than I need to, so is this a possible alternative? My local acupuncture practitioner is aware of my warfarin 'dependence' and is confident of a positive outcome- any thoughts/comments?
Take care,
Rob

Does the swelling always disperse in time?

I was admitted to hospital 2 months ago with bilateral DVT'S. My right leg didn't swell too much but the left is still severely swollen, from hip to ankle, and I have difficulty mobilising. I started on warfarin on discharge about a month ago and am still in the process of stabilising the dose. Last INR was 3.1 and I am on 6mg of warfarin daily, with repeat INR's weekly. I am getting sick notes month by month and I am about to lose any pay from my employers. I am frustrated that the swelling is not going down, in fact, it seems to be worse and is often very painful. My GP says I must be patient and the swelling will reduce in time but I am starting to panic that I may always be like this and may never be able to return to work. Should I be afraid that I might always be this swollen. I was expecting a little swelling to remain but this is very severe, to the extent that I have difficulty bending my knee. Does anyone have any experience of this that they could share with me? ... read more

Feeling a clot dissolve?

I was diagnosed with a DVT in my upper left thigh/groin area in the spring of 2011
and did Coumadin therapy for 6 months. After stopping coumadin, the leg often felt
tired and heavy and an ultrasound showed that the clot had not fully broken up and
there was a secondary clot in the lower leg. I've been back on Coumadin since
December 2011.

Here is my real question: have any of you ever felt the clot breaking up or dissolving?
Several months after re-starting the coumadin, I would periodically feel a warm,
spreading sensation in the area of the clot (upper left thigh). Not warm to the touch,
no pain or cramping, just a feeling like I had leaned against a heater. It would last a
few seconds to a few minutes. This happened over the course of several weeks and a
nurse told me I may actually be feeling the clot breaking up.

Now, over the past few days, I'm getting the exact same sensation in the back of my
right thigh - I never had a clot in the right leg. This ... read more
